'm joined by howard fineman with "the huffington post." also we have romney's -- let's take a look at this howard, romney's 47% comments had a lasting impact on his standing. "the washington post" reported just today, quote, in the two weeks since the surreptitious video of the remarks surfaced, they have pierced the national consciousness in a way few blunders do. in the closing stretch of the presidential campaign, the moment has become a defining element of romney's candidacy. new poll by pew shows how deep these comments penetrated. 67% say they knew romney made those comments. that's of the whole country. of those people, 55% said they had a negative reaction toward hearing them. the only thing in politic that is is worse than voters deciding they don't like you is when voters decide you don't like them. howard, what a great turn of phrase by alex castellanos when voters sense you don't like them. >> well, here in colorado, chris, the obama campaign is certainly not letting people forget those comments from that private fund-raiser back in may. talking to people here, they say

dismissed that way, injury added by insult. i'm joined by chuck todd and howard fineman with "the huffington post." the latest poll shows among likely voters the president leads 49% to 46% for romney. that's down net two points from two weeks ago when the president was up by five. to what to you attribute the movement, chuck todd? >> well, first of all, the more important number has always been the president sitting at 49% or 50%. i would go through his job approval rating at 49%, his ballot test at 49%, those converge, and that's what matters and 49% puts you in the, quote, re-elect zone. what's affecting romney, this is something we've been watching there is an enthusiasm gap among core republican voters among core democratic groups. overall there's a ten-point advantage among those republicans who call themselves nines or tens when on a scale of one to ten asked how interested they are in this election. there's been a ten-point gap pretty consistent all year. that's why for instance on the registered voter number, the president has a seven-point lead and it shrinks more than in half down

disappointments to me -- perhaps i can lay it on my own children because i am not sending items to "the huffington post" and elsewhere to explain that when the auto industry ran into trouble, it cut $80 billion in roughly six months. the financial -- it received $80 milliobillion dollars in roughlx months. how big is the sector that produces young adults? can you imagine an economy without young adults? if you want to spend in this economy, the young at sector, you never produces your cars. the auto sector. you know that the financial sector handles your accounts. you know who produces the food on your table. that is our cultural sector. autos is 1.5%. finance is 7.5%. how big is the young adult sector? 10.5%. it is without doubt the most important. depending on how you look at it, it is the largest sector in the economy. it is labor-intensive. you spend money in that sector, you will create jobs. you cannot imagine an economy without young adults. you know you have to invest in them. all of you know the returns on investing in kids. i will not go back through that. what i will say is that we as a

is another example of what i think journalists should try to avoid. this is the original "huffington post" story. it is about harry reid saying mitt romney has not paid taxes in 10 years. it was unsupported here say from one anonymous source. there is no evidence that is verifiable to support this claim. if you read the story, it is narrating the claim in a very correct way. it is only much later that the journalist gets around to mentioning that the claim is impossible to verify. i have highlighted that here in green to visually highlight how much of the story is repeating a false claim and how little is pointing up the problems. let me give you a contrast i think is a better approach. here is a story. it is a day two or dates 3 story. it is about the debate and contest and let about -- less about the specific charges. it is worth noting in green how much of the story is emphasizing the truth and calling into question the claim. we cannot say what romney did or did not do on his tax returns. but there is no verifiable evidence on the table to support harry reid's claim. the story was tha
